Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales. Septiembre 2016

Again the art of multiple impressions comes to the arena of confrontations in an event that seems to stabilize in its temporary realization, now every three years: the Encuentro Nacional de Engrabado, in its ninth edition for 2016, aims to become an artistic event for the necessary evaluations, both from the point of view of their own value of technical demands and the freest approach for the ideo-aesthetic plane, as well as their incidence for the historiography of Cuban art as memory, and to propitiate the most important for their makers - "a space for meeting and exchange" [as its call states], and visualize and promote -also- the existing creation areas ...

After a worrying temporary jam of approximately six years, the VIII Encuentro Nacional de Engrabado -celebrated in 2013- recovered the urgencies of its artist practitioners who -years ago- also lost other spaces for the verifications [and recognitions] of where was this expression of the artistic visuality in our country, of an old trajectory in the history of universal art itself. The present event has been outlined in a series of actions that are collected from that in its program form that already seems to signify it. The show-contest [which has its registered headquarters in the Visual Arts Development Center], with a little less pieces than the previous one, although imagining that with that same wide spectrum of technical-artistic quality: fifty pieces of authors [ of a total shipment of eighty-one pieces] of six territories of the country [Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana, Cien-fuegos, Sancti Spíritus and Santiago de Cuba], as well as the selection of two Cuban artists living in the States United and Norway, and of students still from such prestigious teaching institutions, such as the National Academy of Fine Arts "San Alejandro" [with a very attractive manifestation of the event, both from its traditional practices, and from those that are now marked as " experimental "], although not like this -this time, with only one participant- of the University of the Arts [ISA] that feels Chair in its Faculty of Plastic Arts for the engraving.

With a thematic amplitude of four fundamental lines for the collations Historiography of the Engraving and its creators in contemporary Cuban art; Contemporary Cuban graphics as an expanded concept based on the diversity of media and media; The teaching of printmaking in Cuba: learning dynamics in art schools and workshops; and the scabrous subject of contemporary Cuban engraving and its insertion in the art market], the Theoretical Event of the IX National Encounter of Engraving - also with international profiles, given the participation of the Commissioner and President of the Cabinet, Drawing Room and the Estampa de Madrid, Manuel Víctor del Campo, in addition to the intervention of specialists from Havana and Las Tunas already confirmed at the present of this text; as well as the aforementioned educational institutions - aspires equally to become that urged area for those memories as a more up-to-date reminiscence, rather -until the moment- of the history of contemporary Cuban art.

Likewise, one of the most attractive aspects of this new encounter of Cuban [and international] engraving is - without doubt and also - its program of collateral exhibitions: the event was honored with the presence of the 1999 National Visual Arts Award, Antonio Vidal 11928-20131, with graphic works from his personal archive under the care of his widow Gladys Domínguez; the samples of two of the artists awarded in the last eighth edition: Marcel Molina Martínez [Grand Prize], with Ritmo de azúcar, at the Visual Arts Development Center [CDAV], and Dairán Fernández de la Fuente [Collateral Award of the Experimental Graphic Workshop of Havana], in the headquarters of this institution; the two international exhibitions present in this new confrontation for the engraving: the collective Cabinet of Spanish prints from Cuenca to Havana: 50 years of graphic arts in Spain, and the staff of the South African Norman Kaplan, among others. Here is distinguished by its conception of collective exhibition The book of art, a different reading, which will occupy a place in the Provincial Center of Plastic Arts and Design [CPAD] of Light and Crafts, and whose purpose will be to show the different ways of creating a format diverse from the engraving for the book and encourage an active interaction with the "spectator reader"; This aspect could well enter -as experience- to the level of the debates in the theoretical sessions of the event.

Havana dresses again with the art of printmaking, this time with a note that distinguishes the ninth edition of its national meeting: its sample-contest and its collateral exhibitions will also be part of the program of the XLIX Congress of the International Association of Art Critics [AICA] in our country, thus offering the possibility that its more than two hundred delegates from various continents, participants of this world conclave, can approach the most up-to-date creative time of this artistic expression in Cuba.

Congratulations, then, the IX Encuentro Nacional de Engrabado that is already beginning ...
