Exhibition by Elisabel Michelena González. Provincial center of Plastic Arts and Design. Oficios street Nr. 362 between Luz and Santa Clara, Old Havana. April-May 2017
The celebration of these tiny natural sites expresses a reminder of what nature itself tells us in its vast expanse. She has been painting, from her own photographs, enlarged details of the vegetable world, such as dried leaves or herbs, not chosen for their beauty (painting postcards), but for their expressive and suggestive possibilities. His spirituality gives the interpretation of his work a biblical metaphorical plus where life, death and creation intervene.
Some of his things remind me of the Caravaggio Fruit Basket, with its imperfect fruits and leaves preyed on by worms and insects. The idea of the "expiration of all things" behind some of his images can be traced in his readings; as the Book of Ecclesiastes says: "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity". Their natural corners, which would normally be ignored or ignored by almost all of us, as rushed and stressed as we are, have been saved from senescence to be "immortalized" in subjects as prestigious by tradition as oil and canvas.
