Deciphering the infinite

"We are all born of something that makes us shine, silent of obedience where it will never be dark. But I remain in spite of beating in no one: I am the water that furrows through the eyes of the night."

Elias Permut is a creator straddled in two of the great fields of human expression, poetry and painting, which he works with a dazzling unity.

His plastic work is presented as a gradation from white to black, that is, from the whole to the overwhelming nothingness. He is an artist focused on the rescue of the universe, through a personal configuration of cultural heritages, both from the West settled in Greek symbology, and from the millenary East, in particular what has to do with the Hebrew heritage. A canvas like Born of the Invisible -also the title of one of his poems- seems to recover the trajectory that Plato outlined for the human being: "the artist imagines an irruption, an ortho of life, as a transit that goes from the inferior of existence to the fullness of a knowledge that, more than constructed, would be rescued in memory". For the crucial theme of Permut is fusion - of verse and pictorial stroke, as well as of symbolic image and anguished reflection on the harmony of the world. Therefore, a hallucinatory symmetry fills these works, in pursuit of a balance always questioned. Rarely in Cuban plastic art can one find such an intense confluence between the meticulous line and a kind of deaf scream. Permut's paintings take on, shaken, a Pascalian setting in which the most succinct and geometric allusion to the human being - be it a seraphic entity or an indefinite fallen creature - always appears at the crossroads between a higher level of the spirit and an imperfect terrain. Under the rigorous geometry, the artist gives birth to the very personal mathematics of his painting, over and over again leaning out to the eternal fractality that only our time has been able to know. Lezama, Carpentier and, above all, Sarduy already spoke to us of the Cuban neo-baroque as a space in flight and that leaves us here and there a thirst for dynamism and growth. Permut's obsession with fractals allows us to recover Orion. His strange and strong engineering of the image reminds us that the plastic arts are a balance of being and a route to the absolute.
